Track in my back land

Hi guys,

I am new to the forum. My kids and I are getting into Karting. We got new karts but it beceomes so difficult to hit the track. So we decided to build a track in out back land it would be asphalt i am trying to make something nice. I am going to leave layout here

Do you guys think it would be good for KA100 karts?

Is it long enough?

Would you change something?

Do you have a better layout?

Thank you!!

That is a pretty short straight at 200’. Most tracks are double or triple that length. I think you will have a really hard time gearing for that. And the track appears just super small and tight, more like a rental kart track. A KA would not be much fun there. I think you would have a rear sprocket the size of a dinner plate to actually get the kart to run decent.

I would say less is more in terms of corners for this situation. But I’m not sure you have enough room there for something reasonable.

Where are you located?

Out of curiousity, is the additional space shown not useable because of reasons? Can you scale it up? It seems like the track occupies a third of the available space kind of.

Taking some quick measurements it looks like the track is 17 feet wide. That is really narrow. It might be ok for playing, but will be tough to race. I think closer to 25 is a normal minimum. A bigger concern is 7 foot spacing between a corner and another straight. I have looked at a number near me and I saw nothing less than about 25 feet. I think 7 represents a safety concern.

Great that you have the space, and assuming separation from neighbors, and local attitudes to do something like this!

Coming from a past of autocrossing and Formula SAE, and having a local track that’s quite nicely built on a large parking lot, one thought I had on something you might consider is rather than having a single fixed layout, instead lay larger, longer strips of asphalt with some connectors that you can reconfigure with pylons or barriers, such as Phoenix Karting Barriers or such. This will effectively give you and your kids nearly infinite tracks within safety reasons.

You can make this look pretty good with curbing at the right places, and a good balance of grass/dirt and asphalt. Or just lay down a giant asphalt strip if it’s easier and maybe astro turf or just decorate the non-track sections.

I think that’s just pitlane. The longest straights I see are 50’-70’. 206 would make more sense than a 2 stroke for sure.

I wonder if a better approach (and potentially even cheaper) would be to pave the full area and then cone or paint the layout. The opposing paths do get abnormally close to each other, but the speeds will also be low. Having fully paved runoff will mean your brakes still work, too. 10’ of grass won’t scrub much speed.

Agreed. You could do more with the space that way. Probably less expensive too!

Is it stalkerish that i’ve worked out its North East of Indianapolis just off the road to Lapel?

Yes. Yes it is.

Gotta keep abreast of new tracks. Nothing weird about it at all. :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Just make a dirt oval…not joking.

You’re definitely space constrained. Personally I’d try a couple of different layouts on dirt, then build the winner in pavement if you really want to.

For fun put a scale sized layout of your track side-by-side with your local one. That might help with perspective too

Oval is a great suggestion.
