New to me X30 2021 OTK. Kart owner newbie. I feel like there should be a pulley on the axle, no?
Also what’s up with the metal clasps on the belt? If this is the way it’s supposed to be run, is the metal the clasps are made of at least softer than the axle?
This setup will definately make the belt slip, causing low water pressure and not enough cooling of the engine. This can be an issue on warmer days. Andy said it, buy a pully and use that to guide the belts.
Clamps on these belts are the best invention ever. Belts made from a single strand of rubber, when breaking, must be replaced by dismantling the whole back of the kart including axle and bearing etcetera. Get yourself 1 or 2 spares.
I agree with TJ, I’ve run belts without a pulley many times with no issues. With the twisted belts I think sometimes it’s more reliable without them as they can’t jump off the rear pully. I personally don’t like the twisted belts for that reason. Anymore I use polyurethane transmission belt which you melt together in whatever length you need. Works quite well, and as an added bonus you can get it in whatever color you want.
Thanks, all. I ordered the IAME pulley to have the options to run it either way, as well as spare braided belts.
With the braided belts, I like the idea of having a pulley surface to contact the metal clasp on the braided belt and serve at worst as a sacrificial surface, rather than the clasp contacting the axle directly.
This is a great tip, thanks. I’ll add it to the Amazon cart. What diameter do you like?
The O-ring type belts can be cut and superglued back together, eliminating the neccesity to pull the axle apart. The glued joint is stronger than the native belt – we’ve tried pulling them apart and failed. Also, it’s not a high-tension belt. Just take care to line up the ends.
I like this idea but has superglue ended up where it wasn’t supposed to be trying to do this in the heat of battle? Figuring a lost water pump or belt would be a potentially hectic moment in a kart weekend, ie: engine swap in between sessions…
You make 2 and leave the spare already around the axle taped/zip tied to the bearing hanger. Saves you time if/when you find the broken one right before your next session.
