Trying to rebound from the prefinal …

Ryan posted this lovely flowing layout in Fl. He neglected to identify the facility however… is it private?
Anyone been? Might be a bit long for my beloved gx270’s.

That looks like the Monticello Kart Track up in the FL Panhandle area near Tallahassee.

Aha! Thank you.

Sadly… “Due to changes in regulation regarding Kart tracks in the State of Florida by the Department of Agriculture, MKMC us NOT offering rental karts at this time”

A session in the KZ from Jacksonville yesterday. My son and I had a great father’s day together.

Your nighttime video quality looks really good. Are you using a GoPro or something else?

My GoPro (Hero 11 Black) looks perfect during the day but once the sun sets it’s awful; it always comes out shaky like this:

Any tips?

Mines a Hero 12. I think you really have to mess with the settings sometimes to get useable low light footage, and your mount has to be just right to not transmit too much vibration to overwhelm the digital stability algorithm. It really is a crap shoot with GoPro at night.

The GoPros aren’t known for their awesome low light ability. That being said, I have pretty good results on my 12.

At night or indoors I make sure it’s set to 24 or 30fps.

I think what you are seeing is from radiator mount: since it’s night, it’s shooting at lower fps and also applying lower “shutter” speed. While this looks ok for me on my head mounted camera, on yours the shakiness is high.

Lower shutter speed and lower fps gives you less sharp images and the trails. (Persistence of vision is why we can use low shutter speed blurry single images to make a movie, the motion blur gets smoothed by our brains. Here the super shaky radiator mount causes the light sources to be shaking trailers, which feels unnatural, and our brains don’t tune it out.)

Hero 12 30fps (and I put the little light mod on to light up my hands).

Last heat is full night in comparable lighting as you. Scroll towards end..

Hero 11 is same chip as 12- the quality should be same as mine - I think you are seeing the cam being vibrated by your high revving 2-stroke and radiator mount).

Make sure it’s set to 30fps/max hypersmooth. Leave all else auto. @nikspeeds thoughts?

Finally got around to stitching together my GoPro footage from the Stars race at New Castle. Here’s the final. There’s a little bit of chasing and battling in the first half, then the second half is mostly just laps and tire management (with a touch of exhaustion).

Beautiful Sunset night for some practice laps around PKRA in Phoenix, AZ

Damn @ApexGRT I wish you were a single speed guy so I could do a lead and follow practice day with you. I feel like I could learn so much cause you race the same tracks I do (Orlando, Jacksonville) and you were on a super high national champ level and that knowledge and smooth touch is clearly still in you.

I noticed you aren’t touching the curbs on your left at 3:47, your right at 3:50, and your left at 3:52. Why not? I always run over those when running counterclockwise at Jax and it feels like there is little penalty for taking that extra space because those curbs are pretty flat and don’t upset the kart much. I do lift just a bit over the right side curb (3:50), but it still feels faster than going around it.

Thanks for the kind words!

Regarding my line choice, I am looking for all the traction I can get accelerating through there. Typically painted curbs have less traction and upset the chassis a little.

That said, I haven’t raced there in a long while and might alter my lines if I were chasing someone and saw a better option.

Back when I raced at Jax in the late 90’s and early 2000’s I was using much stickier tires, was 30-40 lbs lighter, and the track had way more grip. I was running 32.0 times in my mod honda in 2002 and getting over 3 g’s on the telemetry in all the banked turns.

My modern KZ masters setup has way more power, but it is heavier with less grippy tires. I am in the mid 34’s even with 5 mph more on the straight. I kinda want to take the weight off and get the stickiest tire available (MG Greens?) to see if I can get the thing to hold like we used to in the banked rubbered in corners. Right now I am only at 2.5g’s max

Finally comfortable enough tuning to jet it down and get it on song. What a difference a handful of jets and needles do to wake up a KZ.
