no he was right on are bumpers but there was no where to join the battle

my teammate who i worked with all weekend

Bummer on that chain, so close to the end. It’s funny how turns 12, 13, 14 don’t look too hard to figure out on GoPro footage, but I still don’t have them, what I define, as “figured out”. I skipped Friday test and tune, thinking race day practice would be enough and … nope. Got my ass handed to me all day by the guys who practiced Friday.

It’s pretty common for the swift and KA motors to “load up” or run really rich when they’re at low speeds for extended times like during a start. That being said I’ve been struggling with my own sons carb tuning and it wanting to be too rich and Smokey out the exhaust. The carbs are pretty finicky to get right so possible that particular motor was just setup a hair too rich.

I can’t speak for Andy, but I don’t thing I’ve ever truly been happy with how I’ve gone through 13/14 yet! Always trying tweaks and if I get one that I like it affects the other.

Making a slide or mistake out of 14 is a huge penalty too. In the video you can see Andy pull up to my rear tire because I bogged out of 14. In my sons video he gets blasted on the straight twice by Trevor because he bobbled out of 14 and lost momentum.

13 is pretty much throw away, you just need to position yourself for 14. I actually prefer a slightly narrower entry on 13 than most…but if you are right on someone’s bumper through there and not making a move on them you are pretty much at the mercy of whatever line they are going to run otherwise if you run my narrow line to someone’s wider line you’ll punt them on the way to apex.

I would have thrown a hail Mary on that last lap there if I hadn’t lost the darn chain…I’ve yet to see one work out in either 13 or 14 because whomever is getting passed can just exaggerate their line through 14 and get a run back down the straight and usually beat the person to the start finish line.

None that I was in person for, had one kart get stuck under the barrier on the practice day before USPKS took over is all that comes to mind. Ellis Spiezia also had a nasty one the day before I arrived for a Rotax event there.

It is the time of year when racers thoughts turn to crashing their trailers again…

How do you like race chrono pro as compared to racerender?

https://racechrono.com/

I am guessing the primary difference is in workflow.it appears that you do this in-camera as opposed to after fact on desktop.

Nice chase-down of 475! Once you got the draft it was very noticeable.

I have yet to try racerender. I love how easy it is to use race chrono. I just plug my sd card into my chromebook and use the android version of the app

Can you somehow use it on desktop? That’s not clear to me from site.

I think it is only IOS and Android. You may be able to use the IOS version on a Macbook but I don’t think they support anything on Windows

How would you deal with this:

Starts at 10:29 and goes until he goes Offtrack at 13/38.

There’s some unusual stuff going on here and I can’t quite figure out if I handled this well.

After getting caught out by the unusual braking, I got careful and gave a lot of leeway, expecting early braking and general unpredictability. I became hesitant to try to pass because I was not confident that his defense would make sense and might end badly for all involved. You can see there’s some pretty huge relative speed moments under braking that are potentially crashy.

I opted to back it up and let it play out, which was ok in the context of a 6hr race. I would imagine that in a typical 15 lap sprint race, I might have been tempted to push on through. This had been mostly a wet race, which I stink at, so I wasn’t all gung-ho as I was pretty sure my position overall was mediocre. I had the luxury of being able to take the long view.

I am guessing there was no malice here, though it felt like I was being brake checked a few times. Just a guy racing hard with a bunch of low end grunt I couldn’t do much about. Eventually he drove himself off the road, giving me open track, again.

Had there been a challenger on my tail I may have either been impatient and likely to be forceful in passing or alternatively I might have let the guy behind go play with the kart ahead and see if they would tangle, getting a two for 1.

I guess I’m asking if you guys feel this was an odd interaction from a racing perspective, and your thoughts on what’s appropriate in this context in terms of response. Maybe sometimes the only answer is to hold back like I did, not sure.

at 11.34 seeing him brake there I would have immediately dived up the inside. I don’t think he is brake checking though. I think they just might be tired, they’re flopping about a bit, hence why the exit stage right.

You can only decide if you handled it well, I didn’t see any malice on his part.

Was this for position or being lapped? I can see why you feel you were being brake checked but as you realized and I am sure he did too he had the low-end grunt that was going to make it hard to get him out of a turn. I take his somewhat erratic braking as inexperience or an issue with the kart or possibly both. Plus he is trying to defend. I think you did the right thing but I would have forced the issue if this went on much longer.

Aha. Bingo you are correct. Why didn’t I think of that in the moment? Inexperience, I suppose.

You may be correct also about him possibly being tired. This was the final heat of the 6 hr race and checkered flag was about 5 laps later. That would explain the inconsistency in braking.

Thanks Alan!

This wasn’t for position which is one of the reasons why his defense sort of baffled me. But, there’s no way to know that in an enduro, I suppose. From his perspective I was a kart on his tail and I think he had every right to fight.

From my perspective I was like lemme by I got laps to make up. The braking made me feel it was more of an inexperience thing as opposed to doing odd things like big boot of brake in chicane and really early end of straight braking. Which is why I didn’t punt him.

But, to your point, the laps were getting on here and I was running out of time and patience. Fortunately you are correct that it was inexperience and he ultimately drove off into grass and I didn’t have to be the bad guy and move him.

be a monster, that’s the best way to be.

Well, I think you saw you were a lot faster than him, you should have passed him right away. We already discussed this back then, but your lack of assertiveness (because you dont want to crash people and it is not a bad thing) costed you and your team 9 seconds (roughly) in 5 laps. Even in a context of a 6h race, it is a lot

Oof. I feel bad now. :smiling_face_with_tear: I should channel Violette.

Looking back on footage, I seem too concerned with keeping momentum when I should just send it down the inside and block dudes out. Something for me to think about.
