Which camera to get for coaching?

I’d like to be able to compare video of driving vs MyChron data. Also, ideally side by side with different driver.

Currently don’t know anything about software. Going to use Mychron 6. And looking for suggestion on whcih camera and mount to get? This being 4 cycle class I see people mounting cameras on left seat stay.

What is a “gold standard” for mount and camera?

If it were me, I’d rig a pole mount vertically, just behind driver, right side seat strut, with a 360° cam. Legal only for practice days, probably. For in-race video, I’d use the Cam Box in-helmet camera.

GoPro or something like the Insta360 are pretty standard kit. Plus an adjustable Ram mount off Amazon that you can clamp to the seat strut. I’ve been running my GoPro this way for a few years now and it never fails. Mounting so you can see your hands and feet is the most important thing for coaching.

For coaching, the ultimate fidelity of the video isn’t as important. You don’t need 4K to see your feet and hands, so don’t feel like you need to spend crazy money on the nicest camera.

The CamBox is cool and I have one of their original cameras, but they are outlawed for most race series so you can only use them for practice.

Here’s the view from my setup:

Any specific GoPro that works better than others?

Why AIM makes cameras then(SmartyCam)?

I wonder about ease of syncing and overlaying data in race studio with camera. Sounds like it’s not an issue with GoPro?

Ideally I’d like to, for example, compare same segment lap to lap where mistake were made and show difference in video + data

I’ve got a GoPro Hero9 that works well. Anything with decent image stabilization would be fine (I believe anything Hero8 and up). GoPro’s quality/image stabilization is great.

AIM SmartyCam would get you the integration with the MyChron/telemetry that you’re looking for. It seamlessly syncs data with the video. The quality isn’t as nice, at least from what I remember of the past few iterations of it. The image quality and image stabilization aren’t as solid as GoPro’s.

I’ve seen folks run both at the same time, to get the benefits of both.

I don’t have much experience with the SmartyCam or data overlays with video.

The SmartyCam integrates all the MyChron’s telemetry so it can view a lot of data in real-time. But it is quite expensive.

The GoPro Hero is what I use. I’ve had bad luck with the Hero 8, 9, 10, and 11 but this standard Hero has been great.

How do you analyze/coach wit Go Pro? To me it sounds like MyChron data overlaying is a must? Or you can simply look at video, see what driver is doing and make suggestions on changes?

Yes, their SmartyCam is expensive :frowning:

Well, the best way to see what a driver is doing wrong is to physically observe their hands and feet while they drive. I can watch a video and tell you after three laps what the driver’s issues are.

If I need data to illustrate my coaching lessons, I can easily bring that up in RaceStudio and match up the video with the data to show where and why things are better or worse.

I guess it’s stupid statement, but in both race studio and video there is timestamps I can follow to find correct video segment?

And when we talking “HERO” it’s their basic HERO with no numbers @$199, right?

I switched from GoPro to DJI, don’t regret it a bit. Great battery life and interface.

The osmo 4 is on sale currently and is an excellent camera.

IMHO, the SmartyCam is the way to go. I am a bit biased, but it buys you consistency and time. It just works and you get data on the video AND the synched data/video in RS3 Analysis. The second part is it does the data overlay real time so there is no trying to align data, put streams together, or anything else. You can watch the video with data on it as soon as you take the card out. The SC are also durable and able to be repaired if you have any issues or damage.

It’s so pricey tho. It’s such a cool package but the lack of video quality sort of makes it uniquely useful for analysis but less so for making pretty videos. I do think that someone who wants it to view footage for analysis with data synched and widgets for playback, it’s awesome.

Thanks! Will start with this camera, I don’t have action camera and it’s cheaper and universal.

Once we start using it on kart and see issues with syncing/etc - we can get AIM one.

Basically, watching your footage allows you to see what you are doing which is surprisingly instructive. Fly on the wall looking over your own shoulder type thing. A coach can of course use the footage to point out specifics.

So, as a for example, this lap of mine shows me why it was the fastest of the race because it was different in one spot than the rest and I can see why and where…

I use two cameras …InstaGo 3s inside the helmet and GoPro Hero11 on a carbonfiber side mount. For overlay , I use telemetry overlay, and VSDC to process the videos…results are quite good! I’ll share some links and pics!

Is this CF mount something readily available?

I assembled mine using Fanaue parts bought through AliExpress (I live in Brasil)…but I found a CNC brand today called Bgning…they have it pretty much pre-made. You’ll just need to buy the clamp with 1/4’ inserts for 1” ball head …I have another post somewhere describing all the parts that I use…
