Why Does My Driving Performance Drop During Long Races?

Hey everyone, I’ve been karting for a while now, and I’m facing an issue that keeps bugging me during long races or extended practice sessions. At the start, my lap times are solid, and I feel in control, but after about 10-15 laps, my performance starts dropping. My lap times worsen, my focus dips, and my reactions feel slower. I’ve been working on my stamina and fitness outside of racing, which helps to a degree, but it doesn’t fully solve the problem. It’s frustrating because I know I have the skills, but something is going wrong during these longer sessions.

I’ve heard from a few other drivers that tracking your data during these sessions can help pinpoint where things start to go downhill, which got me thinking—maybe I’m missing something in the way I track my driving performance. I’ve been using a driving tracker tool, and it’s been helpful for analyzing data like speed, braking, and cornering. For those unfamiliar, a driving tracker is a tool that collects real-time data while you’re driving, allowing you to monitor various aspects of your performance like lap times, acceleration, and even helps you calculate total driving distance online . The idea is that by having access to this data, you can analyze your strengths and weaknesses, make adjustments, and hopefully improve over time. But the thing is, even though I get good insights after the race, I’m not sure how to use that data to actually improve during longer sessions. I’m inspired by the way the tracker collects data in real-time and gives you feedback on your driving style, but I feel like I’m not utilizing it in the best way to avoid this drop in performance.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? I’m curious if there’s a specific part of my technique that starts to degrade over time. Could it be my braking, acceleration, or maybe even cornering that deteriorates as the race goes on? I’m trying to monitor my lap times as I drive, but it’s hard to figure out exactly what’s happening without getting lost in all the numbers.

Also, I’ve noticed some drivers say paying attention to real-time data during the race can help. But for me, it feels like when I start focusing too much on the numbers mid-race, I lose focus on the track itself. Do you guys have any strategies for balancing this? How do you keep an eye on your performance data without letting it distract you from driving?

Any tips on how to manage longer races, maintain focus, and prevent this performance drop would be greatly appreciated. I’d love to hear how other drivers tackle these issues and if there’s anything I can do differently with the tools I’m already using.

Is this in rental karts or race karts?

Is physical or mental fatigue involved? Or is this purely a mechanical thing?

Hard to tell from your post but on the mechanical side, tires evolve over the course of a session. I know that seems obvious but you didn’t explicitly mention that. So yeah grip changes and kart changes.

On the brain front, there’s myriad possibilities. Hell, I’ve even ended up in the grass going down the straight once or twice cos I spaced out.

I’ve also had periods earlier on in my driving where I drove worse, later in sessions as I was getting performance anxiety and sort of would shoot my driving in the foot by overthinking and not letting go of inevitable imperfections… which would cascade.

And to that point…

How old are you ? Would you consider yourself fit ?

If you can keep your mental focus at 100% then you should be able to go the race distance no issues.

But first, is it rental or competition karting ?
