2021 Formula 1 Season: Discussion Thread

Did Bottas have damage? Why didnt he just pit again and go for the fastest lap?
Man, Bottas is really disappointing at starts. He falls back, than gets stuck.
Im really surprised that they didnt take away those kerbs for the race, caused so much damage and debris.

Who do you guys think is gonna win the champioship?

Not sure you can take away those kerbs easily. They aren’t bolted in like sausage kerbs.

Hamilton is favourtie currently. Merc has the edge slightly.

I saw somewhere that Bottas’ car had enough damage from the original puncture and to protect from further damage they retired the car. Most likely from the track just being freaking brutal on the cars. I think Mazepin and Leclerc both replaced carbon tubs this weekend due to cracks which probably swayed Mercs decision also.

Hamilton seems untouchable as of late.

I was on the edge of my seat hoping Alonso’s tires would hold on. Very well managed and driven by him, awesome to see!

Max carried a little front wing damage from lap one but even then, he was at best .2-.3 away from Lewis all race. It’s a bit sus that Merc suddenly found the advantage in the last two races.

I thought the sharp curbs were a good track limit enforcer. Add them to more tracks.

Mercedes has clearly found something with engine, but they have always been good at tracks like this.

I will never understand why the track limit is not just any wheel over the white line.

I did like the punctures caused by drivers pushing the limits too much.

Personally I think it’s 50/50. Max and Lewis traded fastest Laps all race long - very little in it and Qatar is a Merc suited track as is Saudi. It’s fair to say Lewis will win in Saudi - provided Max can stick it to P2 the gap will be down to 1 point in max favour +/- 1 for fastest lap heading to the final round which is a track more suited to RB. Yes Merc have found something but they’ll still have to dig deep in Abu Dhabi. Don’t rule Max out he’s still got a great chance.

What’s your reasoning for Abu Dhabi being an RB track? I would’ve certainly called it a Merc track considering their dominance there for the past 7 years excluding last.

Well. The F1 commentators are calling it a RB favour track. I figured they know :joy:

Then every track is :joy:

because you’d need to regulate every corner and it’d be a complete nightmare.

That tracks work best when they self-regulate. All this tarmac runoff has really made things so much worse.

There were periods of the race where Hamilton was easing out .2 every lap without too much fuss, then he chilled because you can’t push the tyres too much. He had a lot of pace in hand.

Regulating every corner is easy at this level. A little machine learning with a quick human review would do it.

I prefer that to traps or car damaging curbs for the cases where someone is over-aggressive and pushes another driver off, or where a driver has to jump out of the way.

or just grass and gravel?

Pack it up boys, Hamilton got it in the bag

Daniel is apparently “tripping major nutsack”. This is an obscure racing term I have not heard yet.

I just following F1 this year, so I’m not aware of the history. But wasn’t Riccardo a better (maybe thats not the right term) driver when he was with Redbull? Most of the time since I’ve been watching F1 he’s been mid pack except for the recent poteum finish.

RedBull was a faster car to cut a long story short.

Gotta remember that in F1 there is a massive difference between the cars, since each team designs, builds, and develops everything from scratch. As Alan said, the Red Bull is a far superior car than the McLaren of late. Most of that comes down to budget.

Danny could win races in a Red Bull that was competitive with the Mercedes at certain tracks, but the McLaren is still a bit off those lead two cars and has been rebuilding since their failed years with Honda from 2015-2017.

In F1 it’s a lot about performing to the max of your equipment, since you won’t always have a shot at the front positions if you’re in a poor team. That what makes drivers like Alonso (when he was in a sub-par Ferrari fighting against the dominant Red Bulls) or Senna (when he was fighting the active suspension Williams) stand out, because they were so good and optimized everything so well that they could drag a car up the grid into positions where it probably didn’t deserve to be. Alonso was driving like a man possessed in his Ferrari years and took the title battle to the end of the year a couple times, but didn’t come away with any titles because the Red Bull was just a faster car.
