Let’s see if Williams can make anything of the '23 FW45.
The Pit Stop.

F1 is returning to las vegas in 2023, november. Ironically ill be there for a trade show that week. Our assc. will probably change the week when they find out all the road blockages and 170,000 people showing up. Lol. I read they will hit 212 mph on the strip. Should be interesting.
… and the hotel room fees. ![]()
Great race! Valiant comebacks by several drivers. Amazing KMag managed to hold onto those mediums for 38 laps to salvage two points!
Max with a great chase down of Lewis, Charles with a consistent and strong recovery, Alonso I don’t even know… did he cut the track? Goes from being in the air after Stroll swerves him on the straight to passing left right and center for a strong result!
Seb with some glory laps out front and then a fighting drive back after the dismal pit stop. He should’ve been top 5! His pass around Magnussen was epic; flat out, twitching sideways, but no lift. Uncle Seb still has it.
I enjoyed that one. Had a bit of everything.
How did verstappen push on mediums for so long? They lifted originally after 12 laps on them, but max than did 20 or so laps with many of them driving like hell behind another driver. I thought they would’ve fallen off by then
Yeah I guess deg was better than expected. After that first stop Ferrari told Charles the deg was actually pretty okay. Mediums were better than anticipated.
Wow that incident with Alonso and then to finish still in 7th. Amazing.
Loved the battle at the end.
I still think the rules need to be changed when a car takes out another as Russel did. That should be at least a stop and go penalty.
Yeah Russell’s penalty was such a weak slap on the wrist. He t-boned Carlos and ended his race and he gets 5 sec and 40 laps to negate it? George again coming on the radio immediately blaming Carlos as well, I’m sick of his perceived entitlement.
Haas successfully protested Alonso for his mirror flapping and then falling off… wow. Bumps him down to 15th and bumps Magnussen up to P8.
They had a point with the protest; Alonso was allowed to return after his pit stop with damage and then it fell off, while Magnussen’s been black flagged three times for having damage this year. They also protested Perez for end plate damage but didn’t win that one because it fell off.
Odd that it’s a penalty if the end plate falls stays attached but not if it falls off…
Alonso’s drive was mega nonetheless.
Why didn’t perez get a penalty…?
And so dumb by the FIA, the teams technically did nothing wrong, the penalty for Alonso was because the FIA fu**** up.
Since Alonso got a penalty, so should perez
I guess Perez didn’t because the FIA reviewed the front wing afterwards and noted it wasn’t “unsafe”. Even though the end plate was cocked for two laps like Magnussen’s every time he got the flag. I think they were going to black flag Perez but then the end plate sheared off.
Alpine got the penalty for releasing a car that had “unsafe damage” after they chose not to fix it on the pit stop.
Seems subjective on the FIA’s part to tell what is and isn’t unsafe. How many cars drive around with floor or diffuser damage you can’t really see and don’t get called for it?
If there is a threat of a part falling off in a dangerous spot = meat ball flag. Then shedding parts on the track even if it lands in a safe area = meat ball flag or penalty.
Not that it’s a perfect solution, but might be a more objective way to enforce the rules. To me it’s make it as back and white as possible or we just let them race with damage.
Sucks either way especially if it’s not your fault. Similar to getting rear ended in a kart and breaking a bumper bolt resulting in a black flag. Or getting brake checked and getting a knock back penalty.
I don’t agree with the decision, to me, it looked a racing incident. Carlos step out of line from behind Verstappen to either pass or defend the inside line. Simultaneously George was aiming for the same spot, probably to block Carlos behind Verstappen. Not sure if Russell was asleep or Carlos moved too quickly but both suffered. I wouldn’t have moved as quickly as Carlos, especially on a start, where you don’t really know who is where. As if a 70 year old kart club racer knows better.
I agree Carlos shouldn’t have been so aggressive in his cut-back to try and get the over-under on Max. But I think Carlos had to lift a bit too to allow Max through, so that probably caught George off-guard who was focused on out-braking Lewis.
George had a floppy endplate too that I never saw if they fixed:
Anybody see an onboard from Lewis? Did he tap Carlos rear right? Pundits on the stream I was watching were speculating, was mighty close
Watched the replay and it doesn’t look like Lewis touched him.
Floppy Endplates makes for a good enduro team name.

Final thought on the consistent inconsistencies of the FIA on end-plates and other damaged items…
-
Don’t allow teams to protest against other teams after the race is completed. Noting it during a race when something can still be done in case the FIA officials are checking out twitter or something instead of paying attention to the race, fine.

The FIA needs to clearly state what is considered “safe” and “unsafe” for various parts, and then black flag immediately as appropriate. Personally I don’t see how an end-plate in whatever condition is dangerous, cracked, floppy, or missing. Same with having or not having essentially useless mirrors. Better yet - just remove the antiquated mirror requirement altogether and I’d bet teams would promptly change to proximity sensors (blind spot) which would be actually useful.
I see now Alpine is protesting the protest because… they’re right, it was too late. Grab the popcorn.
Would you want to take an endplate or mirror to the helmet at 200 mph. I don’t.
