It’s RAWE CEEK! What are our predictions for the new sprint format? I think I prefer last years Qually-Sprint-Final. More similar to grassroots style racing.
But now it’s even a bit confusing to me. With two separate qualifying sessions for two different races.
It is a little more confusing now. I don’t mind the Sprint races but they don’t seem to be able to find the sweet spot on how to execute it yet.
I do like the shortened timings for the Shootout Quali, should make Q3 pretty non-stop for that session.
Yea should really make all sessions from Q1 to Q3 pretty frantic. I think regardless of format teams are not going to push on the Saturday races as they are just not worth the risk/reward of few points up for grab.
Yeah, now there’s even less incentive to perform in the sprint. The points are the same as last year but now that it doesn’t set the grid for the race, I expect to see retirements to preserve the car.
Time to select a random team of Yukis. Or maybe it’s lances turn at greatness
I assume, but could be wrong, that F1 gives the teams more money in exchange for doing sprint races. Hopefully negates some of the risk that teams won’t take it seriously. Additionally points means money and that’s even more important for the smaller teams.
But yes, they’ve tried to introduce some “jeopardy” and not sure they’ve succeeded.
The Race have a good podcast episode where they discuss different options for a race weekend. I think the winner was:
Qualifying
Heat 1 (grid based on qualifying)
Heat 2 (reverse grid based on qualifying)
Grand Prix (grid based on points from qualifying, heat 1 and 2).
There was a couple of former karters (now living the F1 dream as journalists) who favored 2 or 3 heats and the grandprix (also the way I grew up in karting).
Lance has gone well at Baku and he’s had almost a month to get his wrists fully healed.
And he qualifies as a star driver.
Most importantly to the F1 season!
