2023 Formula 1 Season: Official Discussion Thread

He was on his outlap. That’s just embarrassing.

Looks greesy. I forgive him.

Rookie mistake. You simply cannot drop a wheel in the grass on your outlap on a damp track in FP1 when you are trying to get on terms with Verstappen.

I like Checo but just like Bottas with Hamilton, there are bright spots but no one can consistently stay on terms with Hamilton and Verstappen over a full season. The reality is, on their bad days, Max and Lewis are only barely beatable, but on their good days (of which there are many), they are on another level.

Williams and Mclaren pace seems legit. Perez is broken mentally, he is done

That’s a bold statement. Substantiate this claim with specifics!

Done nothing good since Baku, especially in Q

Went into the press saying that he was giving up on the championship

Makes a rookie mistake in FP1 of Hungaroring. Dude is done. To be specific, I think Monaco broke his mind.

Hmmm. Time shall tell. If he retires this year, you have my apologies for doubting you.

He will retire, it just won’t be his choice

I don’t think he will necessarily retire, he’s a great shoe for a mid-field team and I’m sure someone will poach him if he wants to go somewhere else.

But he is not a championship caliber driver in this era and there is tension with Max behind the scenes. Checo has never been one to play second-fiddle to a teammate; he fights hard with all of them.

He’s been dismal since Monaco. Albon has reached Q3 as much as he has. Piastri and Hulk have reached Q3 one more time than him. Perez has the most dominant car by a mile and can’t get on terms with it. He was never a great qualifier but he is now making mistakes because he is trying way too hard to dig out of the hole, and suffering because of it. Same spiral all the Red Bull number 2s have had lately. They realize they cannot get on terms with Max because Max is an alien, they overdrive, they crash and make mistakes, the pressure mounts, they mentally collapse and Marko boots them out the door.

Ricciardo is an easy personality, has maturity and experience, sounds like he has his mojo back in the sim, and is openly gunning for Checo’s seat. I would bet big money he gets slotted in next to Max next year.

Me too. Even Max said this week he’d be very happy to drive alongside Ric again. “I never wanted him to leave”

What’s the deal with merc and Red Bull? Two slowest teams in FP2 in terms of ideal lap. I didn’t get to watch so forgive me if I’m being naive about something

Test to see if this works in a different webpage

Coolio! It works!

Merc were struggling, Hamilton said he had no grip at all. Max didn’t do a representative run and Checo was focused on longer runs.

I think with the dumb tire allocation rule and the useless FP1, most people were on strange run plans so FP2 probably isn’t very representative.

Long run pace is more the focus. There Max is fastest.

Danny Ric through to Q2 by the skin of his teeth… Alfa Romeo looked good in Q1.

Fun session.
McLaren is for real! Awesome by both drivers.

Lewis found something there in the last session. I don’t see him holding off Max in the race but proper effort there.

Both Alfas were strong too which was cool to see. And nice to see Danny Ric challenging Yuki properly now. Hopefully that pushes both of them forward instead of Yuki doing all the heavy lifting.

Max and Ham into each other T1 for old time’s sake. Lando for the win.

Is this the first race with the new tires? Or was that last race?

Silverstone was the new tire debut. Alonso thinks the tire change has hurt Aston and Red Bull a bit more because Aston’s gap to Red Bull has stayed the same but other teams have come alive and jumped Aston.

It was weird, I joined Q1 a little late and saw they were all on hard tires… What?

Anyhow, I think we’ve found where the Mercedes (at least with Lewis) and Alfa are good. A technical slow track. I don’t think the Merc will last as long on the tires as the RB, but I could be wrong. And yes, I could see them taking each other out.
