Would people be interested in a Race Studio 3 training session?
I could do something live with everyone on it so questions can be asked and we can cover whatever items people want. It would also be available on YouTube later so people can review it. Topics can be anything - from how to look at specific things to a general overview of the software.
If there is some interest, we can pick a date and time that works for people.
I think that would be super helpful, based on how often questions here are asked about data.
When I do 1-on-1 driver coaching, I actually try to spend some time showing my workflow in RaceStudio too because I think many people understand the gauge itself and how everything works, but I always get a ton of questions on how to parse through the data and how to view the squiggly lines and actually learn from it.
I’ve finally dove in head first on learning to utilize my own data effectively and I feel as if I progressed through a lot of the basic this past race weekend.
A live class would be perfect timing before I head out for COTA Rd 1 here in a few weeks!
This sounds like a go then. Does the week of 1/27 work for people? I’m in NH, so I’m EST. I can do an evening or day, but evening might be better for PST folks.
Let’s do the 27th at 9 PM EST. That is a little late on the east coast, but good on the west coast. I’m happy to take topics and prepare, but we can certainly cover anything that comes up.
I was going to do it on YT live so it’s recorded. Then it will be available for people to watch later. If you have a topic you want covered, let me know and I’ll make sure to cover it.
@TrailBrakeMatt can you cover how to overlay video with telemetry? This might save me time when I’m editing videos from my insta360 to post here for others to critique my driving. I usually put text in the video to show the laptimes or what number lap I’m on so posters can say “you messed up turn 2 on lap 6” or something like that.
Edit: also, how can I use data to avoid “falling behind the track” as rubber gets laid down during a race weekend? How can I tell if kart needs more front grip, less rear grip, etc?
And if I’m trying to pick the right sprocket to maximize time gained on straights, what should I be looking at besides top speed? Is higher top speed worth the tradeoff of how much time I’m losing by falling off the powerband on exit of slow hairpin? Should I make the longest straight into its own sector and average a few laps together from a session on an 81 tooth rear sprocket vs an average of a few laps from another same day session on an 83 tooth sprocket? How do I do this?
Those are some great questions. For the overlay, you have to use something like RaceRender or another third party software. I always use SmartyCams, so I don’t have much current experience. The ease of use, durability, and analysis of the SC3 Sport cameras makes them an easy choice IMHO. They are not inexpensive, but they buy you time, which is the only thing you can’t buy!
For the karting analysis things, I will admit I’m not the best on setup. I know AiM devices and RS3 very well, driving techniques, but not the karting setup side of things. If someone says how they like to look at things, I can make the software display it. If you tell me what you want to compare, I can show you a lot of ways to do it.
