It’s always interesting to me when some people say driving with more grip is “easier”.
I’d argue it’s the opposite. Your inputs are crucial and mistakes are punished, sometimes with physical consequences (ie bodily harm) if it’s grippy enough.
Had good pace in morning warm up and carried it to qualifying, landing a P5.
Started Heat 1 and knew immediately off the grid that I had a taller gear than everyone else. Kart was gripped up through the heat and was getting killed out of the corners. I got pushed around a bit and made some mistakes, but ultimately didn’t have the race pace and ended up P10.
Changed up the gearing for Heat 2, which was better, but everyone else seemed to find some speed. Like Chase, I feel that the grip is something I’ve never seen before. Feel good about the chassis and driving changes for tomorrow (if it doesn’t downpour). Otherwise, it’s anybody’s guess how the finals shake out.
It was incredibly hot all day, and I think it took its toll on a lot of drivers. Kudos to CKNA staff for handing drivers bottled water in every session as we came off the track into the scale line. Thoughtful touch given the heat.
Also ended up making the final, 34th, had a bit more in it but got turned at the start of heat 1 and had to fight back from there all day. Last on lap 2 to 20th in heat 1, 20th to 14th in heat 2. Just happy to make the feature, will see how the weather turns out but definitely feeling more confident after two longer races.
The grip really is insane, even in my 2 years of ckna at lots of different tracks it’s never been this crazy. Kart in front of me in qualifying almost grip flipped and not the only time I’ve seen that. Never been happier to be 5"7, 125 lbs
Surely it makes the racing worse if you erase all the braking zones by slapping gum ball tires onto a kart that typically doesn’t go faster than a Mini Swift?
Also, people can’t be stoked about grip-flipping into the crash bags…
Same thing was happening to me last weekend in a KA on the new MG compound at Pitt, to be fair.
However I think the racing would be better on a harder compound. I made up more than a couple positions throughout the weekend from the kart in front of me two wheeling and having to back out if it completely to keep from going over.
Yeah the tire is definitely not ideal for 206 in general but some tracks are much better than others. The rhino patches at Pitt make it a hundred times worse it seems.
Hadn’t seen too much of this after the karts in Cup moved away from the older narrow 4 stroke karts. Mainly shows up when you have the tracks with rhino liner type sealer in the corners.
It’ll happen at badger when we go there if you get enough karts on the track. Based on the comment of the new MG compound, I’m curious how Badger plays out next week with USPKS and the rhino lined corner in new section. Though looks to be 20-25 degrees cooler than Pitt.
Obviously, the conditions this weekend and the track had a huge effect on this. However, this is nothing new. Grands are always super sticky (when it doesnt rain). Even when the regional series came to Whiteland, the track gripped up worse than it ever had before.
I believe this tire was developed on old worn out Wisconsin tracks with old laydown 4 cycle karts. It definitely would be nice to revisit the compound giventhe condition of modern 4 cycle karting.
Vega Reds. It’s a tire that the “players” in 206 racing tested and decided on.
Cup started with the Vega Blue. Racers wanted a harder tire. Cup, Vega and TS Racing got together with a handful of chassis manufacturers and prominent drivers at time and tested different compounds. If memory correct, 4-5 were tested down in Florida during “off” season in Midwest
I don’t get it either. Too much grip is silly. I drove mg yellows on a 9hp kart once and everything was flat. I guess when pack racing, being 110% gripped up could be fun, but unless you are in a pack, seems unnecessary to have super grip. Still, seems fun.
It was definitely a challenge and i certainly had fun! I for one had no experiences with two wheeling etc. that’s seems to be a prominent thing on those MGM, Coyote, Eagle, type chassis the “4-stroke” specific ones. When they came for the Divisional last year all those chassis were on 2 wheels. I just struggled with the hop and needed a stiffer axle most likely. I had 2 steps harder to go
