Hilliard Flame Clutch Setup for Standing Start

This is beyond my pay grade, alas.

Iā€™m still rockā€™n the Mycron 4 so I canā€™t help much with the data. I stand by my earlier opinion that your clutch is slipping to much. I think your comment:

might be the proof.

I still wanna see the shoes.

Oh shoot, forgot to take a photo for you!!! I will do that ASAP.

I did notice when I went to clean up my clutch after the race, while the shoes looked fine to me, there was a whole ton of dust / carbon material inside the drum and shoe assembly. I did not see any signs of grease or lube inside but who knows if that would just burn off while racing even if it did get inside and was contributing to the slippage.

Run a Stingerā€¦ No reason to run a Hillard.

He has a Hilliardā€¦ thatā€™s a good reason to run one

Here you go!

I had a stinger previously that came with the engine. I really hated working on it. The springs are annoying, having to finesse the key in was annoying, etc. When I switched to the Hilliard, it was a breath of fresh air IMO.

Also the stinger hub cracked and fell apart. So I wanted to try something different.

Those look better than the shoes I refuse to change. :joy:

I was thinking the same thing, thatā€™s barely broken in. skip WD40 and just brake clean it its brand new. Iā€™ll try to grab a pic of what mine looks like this week

Yeah, this clutch only has ~2 race days and 3 practice days on it. So, safe to say we can rule out the shoes being toasted? Does the condition of the shoes also point away from excessive clutch slip off the line to you?

Thanks again for all the help!

Everything Iā€™ve heard about the Hilliard clutches says to never use brake cleaner on the shoes or the drum. They recommend you use a light coating of WD-40 and then wipe it off. Is that not correct?

I personally believe itā€™s way too easy to get too much oil on the shoes and drum. Once itā€™s broken in the brake clean keeps it consistent every time with a stronger engagement.

If you do use WD 40, brake clean everything first, then put 1-2 drops on a rag to wipe on the drum and skip the shoes IMO.

iā€™ve shot wd-40 straight in the clutch (flame), just for the hell of it, and if there was an ill effect, i never noticed it.

but iā€™m not winning races either, so maybe there is a negative effect.

Iā€™ve never done the WD on the clutch. I Spray the drum with brake cleaner if I remember it while I have it off for whatever reason, but I generally neglect the whole thing until something makes me suspect about it.

Brake cleaner here too. Canā€™t think of a compelling reason to use WD because you should probably clean that off with brake cleaner (or acetone, etc.) anyway.

Just go for the jugular

I just dropped my engine off at the shop. After a quick inspection, he is 90% sure it is a leaky head gasket. They are going to do a leakdown test, cut and lap the valves (if needed) and replace the head gasket for me and just overall, give the engine some love.

Hopefully this resolves the standing start issue and proves the clutch was never the issue!

In theory, the WD40 was a recommendation from Hilliard to eliminate chatter. I never bought into it either. Brake clean only here too

I guess WD40 will eliminate chatter like it will stop bicycle brakes squeaking.

Tough to tell from the pics but you said you are running 2 black and 2 white correct?
