JDM Compact Karting Van - Build Thread

Sick Delica. Fully kitted too!

This is the van/Golf’s replacement:

I feel attacked. Kate got one of those.

So, does the kart goes on top?

If I put the seats down, I think it will actually fit in the back… Only one way to find out.

But no, I planned on getting/building out a little trailer for the kart. This has the V8 so it has like 7700lbs of towing capacity, but I kind of got used to efficiently using space with the vans, so I’m not sure I want something too big and unwieldy. A smaller trailer is easier to maneuver at home and less of an eyesore in my driveway.

@Bimodal_Rocket who is Kate and what year does she have?

Kate is my lovey wife and we bought a 2020 I think before the used prices went bananas. I thought you were making fun of it, but I see you too have been sucked into the porsche hole.

Hot tip: it drifts fine if you turn off traction control. The TC is very effective and intrusive as hell when hooning.

It’s a surprisingly planted car for its size. You deffo feel the weight under braking though.

All in all a pretty dope suv. It does feel like Porsches and VWs seem similar these days. I guess it’s all one big parts bin over at VAG. Would be nicer if they used the lambo bits imho but that’s ok.

Perhaps some forest green calipers?

When it came time to decide on which mid-size SUV was suitable for some fun, as well as being comfy, it was basically between the VAG options. I considered a few others like the Jaguar F-Pace (too small), Acura RDX A-Spec (also too small), MDX (too boring), Lexus RX (too small and boring), but the VAG offerings kinda ticked all the boxes. My buddy has a TDI Touareg he kitted out for off-roading that he likes, so I was also looking at an Audi Q7 TDI that was super cool, but the interior just felt so bland to me. The Cayenne was much nicer inside, and the driving experience much better. It’s still a big, tall, heavy SUV, but at least the Porsche steering feels really tight, the power is good, and with the air ride suspension/PASM it actually handles less like a boat than I was expecting.

May toss some mild all-terrain tires on it, but I’m not going to turn it into a baja truck like my buddy with the VW wants me to do.

Looking forward to discovering all its foibles.

Parking is the problem. Some jackass ruined 3 panels by hugging Kate’s cayenne whilst parking their car.

Porsche has an off-road track thing they do with the cayenne in the woods and the version with the diff tricks is very capable. It seems weird using such a pricey car for off-road, tho.

On a VW note: used to see these around La Jolla in the 80s…

Too small for a kart agreed and the MDX is quite boring. We settled on the RDX A-Spec. I’ll admit…the color was the tipping point

Beautiful car! I have a friend who has an RDX and said the back was tight with car seats in it. He is a bit taller than I am though. I didn’t think it was much smaller than the Cayenne.

Otherwise I love all the latest Acura stuff. I would actually like a TLX A-Spec if I didn’t need an SUV at the moment.

Thanks. We’re really happy with it. Great safety features and sport mode coupled with the 10 speed transmission makes it a swift little grocery getter. I’ll probably consider an upgrade to an Audi next year from my current VW GLI. I’ve always preferred sporty Euro cars. Volvo C70 to a Saab 9-5 Aero and now the Vdub.

Van is back for sale… Auction went ahead and the buyer ultimately flaked on me and ghosted. Great karting hauler for any of you who want to ditch the trailer or buy a do-everything adventure vehicle.

Well that sucks. Nothing worse than wasting your time having an auction complete and then they don’t follow through. There wasn’t a second chance option for the next highest bidder like eBay does? In any case, good luck with the sale again. After looking at all the pictures you had posted on the auction and the detailed description, I realized what a unique vehicle it was and how it would suit someone either in karting or not. Cool van to say the least.

C&B basically starts negotiations with the next two highest bidders to see if either one is interested but neither of them got back to us.

I have a lead or two from some guys that asked the first time around so if it doesn’t sell soon I think I’ve got someone lined up.

Proper safari’d Delica pick-up it looks like. Very cool! These have become really popular as modded off-roaders.

@tjkoyen smol JDM?

Yep, kei truck. Starting to become a popular import alternative to UTVs or golf carts. I’ve been trying to get my dad to buy one for his cabin up north for a while. Cool little things with a variety of bed configurations and real 4WD/locking diffs.

Many a race has ended with a trip back to the pits in that thing!

Ran into this guy again… saw that you sold the cayenne… perhaps some more JDM? It comes with a shovel which is useful for racing excuses.

I forgot to mention, A+ shots there. Do you have experience with this sort of photography? I assume you do since the studio shots of the helmets look on point (you may hire someone to take those, tho).
