Sim Racing Megatopic

What happens if you try it non-vr? Does it run normally?

I want to start getting into more PC sim racing compared to solely PlayStation sim games.

Is there any solid budget build someone has for playing iracing/Kartkraft.
I’m not really looking for equipment like VR goggles or steering wheel but just looking for a PC build sheet.
I know there’s a ton of different options but I figured I’d ask to see if there’s any recommendations or things that you guys swear by.

I will ask @tankyx to give a specific idea but I think:

Graphics card: I ran on low graphical settings in vr with a 1070 but I also have very powerful cpu.

Id say get a 3060 or better but accessibility is hard. You could also use a previous generation 1080, 2070, 2060.

Microcenter has stock on the new Radeon rx 6500 XT as shown above. That would be a good card.

CPU: I will let @tankyx be specific here. I am now on a current gen K cpu but a previous gen will work too.

Ram: 16 of ddr 3200.

You probably will have better luck with prebuilt in terms of getting card.

Here is an excellent build site: https://pcpartpicker.com/

Edit: card choice is somewhat driven by how you intend to play. Single monitor requires very little ooomph. Triples more so. Big triples a lot more. VR is very demanding too. A 1060 would play single monitor just fine, I think. Big triples will need 1080 upwards I think. The 3060Ti I got along with a good cpu runs vr 90fps solid on high detail.

I actually just got a new prebuilt from Newegg last night and the difference from my laptop is phenomenal. I went from 30-40fps in VR (which I felt was more than playable) to a solid 90 and suddenly started Having clean sessions at the Ring of all places. Plus I now have all the graphics turned on.

Gigabyte mobo
I5-11400F
ASUS RTX2060
16GB
512GB SSD

So I did a test.

On my older card. When I made it such that I was dropping frames and was not getting constant 90fps, guess what?

You lose time. .2-.5 in vr, depending upon how much you miss.

I can definitely see that now. I was instantly more consistent and able to throw the car around and catch it without worrying I was going to lose it.

I normally suffer from motion sickness with 3d games and tried VR on a whim just to see if I could do it. Oddly VR has solved that issue. Now I can’t make it out of the pits with a monitor without crashing.

A fast lap

I’ve been diligently plugging away at AMP and getting pretty quick. Here’s a lap where I stomp the final turn, (and not too shabby elsewhere).

Just bid on a reverb g2 vr headset. Hoping to get with the times now that I have a nice gpu.

So. Darn. Close.

I dare not utter it, but we seem to be in the end stages of this lap-quest. Average pace is way up and I am finally flowing all sectors, regularly.

Chasing mastery is a funny thing. It’s not necessarily gradual in how it presents itself. You improve a piece a time, as you discover line/technique. Those learnings then simmer. Some time later, the veggies soften and you can eat the stew.

It’s like a firehose. All of a sudden it all takes and you are fast and precise and consistent. Weird, but I love it.

So a couple things happened last night practice:

I ran S3 in 12.84s. This is huge. I have seen 3, count em, 3 sub 13 S3 in the thousands of laps I have run. This beat my previous best by a tenth. I think we are there in S3. I do not see how to get any more out of this final turn. I think the width you take of the sweeper prior to final turn matters, but it’s subtle.

Importantly, I ran t3-4 as it was meant to be. It was not on a fast lap. It was kind of stunning. There was one turn in and then perfect building throttle all the way through, no pauses. The kart literally was locked in rails and just carried itself through the complex, in the heart of the rubber, perfectly on line.

What was most noticeable was the balance as the kart changed direction repeatedly. It was perfectly centerd and had limited sense of lateral load. It was as if the kart was sucked in to the line and perfectly deposited mid-track, on the downslope, perfect launch.

I’ve been trying to experience what t3-4 should ideally feel like. It took a while but it was worth the experience, it was pretty stunning in the moment. I doubt I’ll repeat it as there was no “push” and I doubt I can make that kalm happen again. I wish I had done this with a good t1 because I have no idea how fast it was. But, blink and you miss it.

Aha! Things are moving along…

I view KK as an RPG. I’m playing the role of a much dirtier driver than I am in real life.

That’s ok, I roleplay that I know what I’m doing in KK.

Next year I want to get a gaming pc, fanatec wheel and join you guys.

You should. A) it’s fun. B) it’s as competitive as you want it to be, and, C) it’s the cheapest seat time of them all.

A setup can be done for pretty little. Table clamp, single monitor or tv.

From there you can get a wheelstand or collapsible rig.

From there you get a permanent rig.

The inexpensive entry level wheels are used by some of the best drivers in the world.

The good gear is nice and certainly improves fidelity/experience but is not “required”.

A busy day in the land of Sim

Not sure what this means. It would appear they are acquiring for the engine.

“DRAG is an offroad racing game introducing 4CPT vehicle physics (4-way contact patch traction technology). A soft-body tyre model allows for competitive time attack and multiplayer wheel to wheel racing.”

@tankyx reports: “It has the looks of an arcade game, but the physics are definitely serious”.
