Supernationals 27

Maybe you guys should make him Texas toast as a return favor. Seems like a pleasant and thoughtful team boss!

Question for @tjkoyen - were there any surprises about equipment this year (your own or the competitions)? It has been discussed elsewhere on the site how much of a jump KA100 lap times have come down over the past year or so and most folks chalk that up to the new tire introduced this season. This late in the year do you concur, or were there some competitors engines (e.g., straight-line speed) that seem to have a real step up from what you’re used to seeing? (based on lap times it seems like parity was very good, but it would be good to hear the thoughts of someone who saw things first hand)

@Muskabeatz - looking at the last heat run (heat 3) you’re lap times are only .7 or so from p1 in a field of national and international championship drivers (that’s quite an achievement!). While realizing that the closer to the pointy end of the field one gets, that each .1 of a second becomes more and more elusive, I have a very open ended question for you - what do you think it would take to find that other .7 a lap? [good luck in the final races! and please ignore this until it/if convenient for you to answer]

Not really on my side. Engine parity seemed as good as ever, never felt I was lacking anything there compared to others or didn’t really see a difference on track even against the top drivers in terms of power. As usual with KA everyone was very close and it was a lot of nose to tail racing.

There were some question marks for a few people regarding tire parity but very difficult to draw any conclusions there or definitively say anything was off. For 99% of my class I think there were no issues or surprises there either.

Watching finals and packing up today. Will have a post about my overall thoughts on this year’s event when I get home tomorrow.

Who built your engine this year?

Innovative/FMS, they’re my guys for years and years now.

The shifter groups are the two races I’m most interested in. Master Shifter might be the most intriguing of the bunch. The heat races definitely suggested a 4 horse race between Lammers, Fore, Musgrave, Musser. They were right with each other for all three heats, although I noticed Mich was keeping up with the group in the last heat before it was red flagged.

But Lammers starts back in 8th from the first heat crash, and Hajek managed to work up to a sixth starting spot after the qualifying contretemps he was in, Patrik seems as fast as the other 4.

The real question mark to me for the race is Musser. He stayed right in the back of that front group for all three heats. I know in an event like this you want to move up every position you possibly can, but was he holding back, trying to stay out of trouble, to guarantee himself a great starting position in the main?

As for Pro Shifter, it doesn’t seem like anyone else has an answer for Van Walstijn, unless the track changes significantly enough to affect him, or something unexpected happens.

At the airport but see @Muskabeatz took p11 in master shifter - congrats!

Turney looked so calm all the time. Moya choke in the final lap, could have been a different story if that didnt happen. What a great race.

Wow that pro shifter final was bonkers. I need to go back and watch that pass attempt for the lead in slow-mo.

Morgato should have timed it more properly. Maybe another lap. IMO

Yeah Morgatto didn’t quiiiiite have position there. Kajak gave him a little space but when Morgatto popped the curb it was all over.

Vasile with some strong defense on that final lap, good racing.

Why did Musgrave have 2 Mychrons onboard?

Only fully watched today this year and some hi-lite clips before that. The parity looked fantastic and that was as good of a SuperNats track as I’ve ever seen - so many passing zones, no ridiculously long straights and the rare accomplishment of being racy for single speed and shifters. Hats off to whoever was responsible for the layout!!

I noticed that too. Had an Alfano 6 and a mychron 5. Kinda odd. Maybe just to have more screen space at a larger size to see better?

Likely for better data sharing for Factory Kart guys that have one or the other?

That makes more sense to me.

That KA senior final was wild. Personally I feel like how Liberante raced was unwarranted - it kinda looked like he single-handedly messed up the changes of himself and everyone else around him for a win.

Getting back to you on this, @calebgilbert. The track was always evolving, but not quite as much as I expected given the new tire compound for this year. We were always close on setup, but had been fishing around with some things to try and find that last bit. Heat 3 I went backwards on setup changes, Heat 2 I think was the one I smoked the inside left barrier in the chicane and was racing with a bent steering shaft, tie rod, and spindle for most of the race, and Heat 1 bent the chassis after getting plowed in turn 1 on the start. I think that bend ended up haunting me most of the weekend, as there were certain spots where I had a really tough time getting the chassis to work, and I think it was because of the bend.

We put the chassis on the frame table again Saturday night before the main, straightened the waist, and straighten the right side ā€œCā€. That was all well and good for the main, but the chassis actually felt even more bent on new tires in the main…this made braking difficult and I nearly crashed in T1 on lap 2, and had to dial out some front bias since the kart was pulling so badly. It settled out and the kart was quite good in the middle of the main.

Come to find out after the race, my right rear tire was 9mm larger than the left rear :man_facepalming::man_facepalming::man_facepalming:. All in all I’m very happy with the GP chassis and the engine we had. At one point I think I was up to 8th or 9th, and while I think we were too high on air, it was driver mistakes that knocked me out of the top 10. I’m sad to have missed my goal, but am still satisfied with P11. It was a fun week, but I’m ready to get back home to the fam.

I want to thank the Kart Pulse fam for all of the support, and showing an interest. I didn’t get to cross paths with @tjkoyen, but was saluting him with a post-race beer from across the paddock :beers:

You did a great job Evan! It was fun following your progress through the weekend.

Thanks for the breakdown, Evan. That was a lot more than I expected to hear about going on in the background! It’s good/interesting to get the feeling from yogi that your full potential has more room for expansion.
