Tillotson 225RS - Discussion and Adoption in USA Karting

Can I ask where you guys got yours, interested in getting one also. Are spares easy to find, not much comes up when I look the engine up?

To me these kinds of decisions rely heavily on location area you are racing in, more so than the merits of the package itself.

Worth noting that the T4 has a World Series event at this time, whereas Briggs does not. As to how that factors into one’s decision that’s really a personal choice. CKNA nationals is a pretty big event too.

Just calling something a “World Series event” doesn’t make it that big of a deal. Especially to a US market. While I agree that the T4 world cup is a big deal, one could easily argue that the CNKA Grands are much bigger and when borders are open just as international.

That’s basically what I’m saying. It’s a personal preference. If you really want to travel overseas and race, T4 offers that.

Hey Derek,
What usually kills a 4-stroke? How do they ultimately die.

With the 206, if maintained properly, you eventually wear all the crosshatch out of the cylinder and start losing leakdown past the rings. Since it is a sealed bottom end, it is time for a new shortblock (parts and labor, about $500 including head rebuild, break in and dyno tune). Boom… brand new engine ready to go for another 2-3 years.

Very rarely, we will see a valve guide wear out. Then it is time for a new head ($125ish) and you are back to brand new.

Now, what do I see the most of that requires a new short block or engine? Rod failures. You would be surprised how many people forget to put oil back in their engine and those rod ends need oil :stuck_out_tongue: . We literally almost rebuild as many blown up from lack of oil as we do “worn out” ones. Might be a slight exxageration, but you get the point.

Thanks! I’ve only blown a two stroke so I was wondering.

Is is engine quality? (Engines are built in China like most of the clones). Yes. We build the engine in two places, either at our own factory in China or at our own factory in Ireland. The block is our own design and tooling, with special reinforcements built in for the racig application. Key components (carburetor, coil, exhaust) are not Chinese–they are top of the line racing components (Tillotson, PVL and RLV).

Is it performance? (They have the edge there, no question) Yes, we think performance is the best 4 stroke engine in the market. As an engine only (T225 class), it gives a bit more horsepower and bottom end than the L0206. You can also pair it withour T4 chassis for use in either the T225 class or the T4 Spec class, and you will see an even bigger difference in driveability. The engine and the chassis are designed to work together for a much more nimble driving experience. We used our own drivers to make sure the driving experience was the best it could be.

Is is cost? (A Tilly is almost double the cost of an LO206 and an inferior motor from a perceived quality and tolerances standpoint) I think you noted in some othe threads that the cost isn’t really any more than the LO206 because our engine includes all the components you need to add to the L0206.

You can order them from several places in the US, including:
Atlanta Motorsports Park (Georgia)
Kart Rising (Florida): (941) 777-0659 ([email protected])
GoPowerSports (Texas): 866 846-5278 (gopowersports.com)
RLV (California): 805-925-5461 (rlv.com)
Kartorama (Washington State): (866) 242-9874 [email protected]
DriveYourLine (Mississippi): driveyourline.com

See T4 Specialists Archives - Tillotson for our expanding list of dealers.

So can you convince OVRP to abandon margay ignite and go with Tilly spec? :sunglasses: I’d be down.

What would be the benefit of that?

You don’t want that. Unless your promoters are better than ours. Offer lots of promise. Then don’t follow through on any of it. Unfortunately he ruined the package for our area.

I actually “Raced” 225RS motor last weekend, two kart totally in Outlaw, other kart has a KZ R1. He give me a 11 turns jump start and try to lap me twice in 8 laps for heat 1 & 2. Last heat, we did 4 laps race standing start, and I did not get lapped. LOL

I really like the throttle compare with 206/WF, 206 throttle is mostly on or off, and 225RS has a longer throttle open, so you can kind of do some throttle modulation.
Engine cold start seems to be a bit pain compare with 206, you will need someone to start you and usually take some pulls.
Laptime wise, I am running the same as our SKC spec WF(moddied WF with not rev limiter), but the chassis is not tuned, either the driver.

It not being the margay. The lo206 is fine but the tilly seems similar/better.

I understand your personal feelings on the matter given your struggles with your chassis, but if you think overall the class/series would be any different, I’m afraid you would be disappointed.

It’s a club thing so I wouldn’t think promotion is much of an issue, actually. I think they fill the class easily, selling the spec chassis directly to the participants. All the races are at OVRP, no travel.

My biggest concern at this point would be suppory. Look how long it took for this reply, 6 months??? What will happen when you have issues…

To be fair, this is not their support channel as such. Compared to other brands, they are amongst the more active ones here.

Yah to be fair he’s been great. Kinda like Roger over at Aim.

In case someone wants to know how the engine compare with a KZ on standing start, it is mega!
