Have that same pair. Problem is their newer stuff isn’t the same at all. Thicker and not as well fitting.
Replaced his Alpinestars with these from Driven Motorsports last fall. Have held up much better and retain good grip even in the wet. The Alpinestars were slick in the wet and started to fail at the seams
I’m sort of torn on them. On the one had they make very cool gloves with a fun and wide variety of designs. On the other hand the quality seems variable. I still buy them because visually they are hard to resist, but I find the pair I got of another brand recently to be “better” from a padding/ protection standpoint.
It may be that they have cheaply made ones that are well priced and that’s what I’m buying. It’s not like they are bad… they grip well and are comfy, but they are thin and wear out pretty fast. It also seems that they have become less good from when they were the new thing.
These gloves have a lot years road racing - the palm is made of Kangaroo hide…don’t know if you can still get these!!
I would like to add to anyone looking for glove recommendations. The most important factor in terms of grip is matching the material of the palm/fingers to the material of the steering wheel. Leather grips leather, rubber grips rubber, and so on. Nothing besides adhesives will grip better (all things equal) than the exact same material on each other. Principle of Like-material adhesion or material affinity.
I wear the 273 because they are super thin and I’d prefer to wear no glove if I could within the rules.
Don’t feel like the 273’s are particularly high quality they all fall apart in the finger stitching and then develop holes in the grip area shortly after…but I keep ordering more because of how thin they are
Minus 273 and Offset are thin gloves that are lightweight and plenty of feel on the steering wheel.
When I raced in KZ a while back (before Minus273 & Offset were around), I was getting a lot of arm pump. So I went to a nomex (fireproof) racing glove. That was a thicker glove with more padding that helped in that instance.
I’m currently rocking some Freem that Keith gave me from a bin in his truck and they are very good. Thicker, more padding, helpful on high grip track.
The minus gloves are nice and thin but pretty disposable in that they will blow out and you’ll need to sew them up, but they are good for a season.
I want to say minus 273 gloves after rocking their stuff since they started but their new gloves are a different design and WAYYYYY worse, they wear out super quick and tear more easily when you put them on and way lower quality stitching and their new design doesn’t feel as good as the old ones either, so same price, worse design, last not as long and just worse in everyway sadly. I just wore out the last set of my old style 273 gloves and now on the hunt for some better gloves that are like the old style 273 gloves how they used to be
I wonder are -273 aware of this. I’m still on my first pair of 273 gloves, 4 years old. We don’t do seasons here it’s all year round so they’ve seen a lot of laps (no wet laps obviously) and still in great condition.
My daughter got the newer ones not long ago so it’ll be good to see how they hold up.
i have no idea how much race specific gloves cost, so i’m assuming using mechanix work gloves is a savings, which is what i do. i get the grippy ones, and i think it’s usually about $16? something in that range.
They tend to range from like 40ish to 140ish. I think the difference between them and the mechanix is length and thickness. The race gloves are probably thinner, generally. They also have sticky finger bits that wear off in time. But mechanic gloves are usually good too.
I haven’t been hearing a lot of good from minus 273 such as grip wears out quick or need restitching I’m going to stick with my offsets as long as I can because they are light and perfect for this weather, but if i were to grab some minus 273’s I better hear good about them
I swear by my Sparco Arrow K
Used mine for 4 years now, basically no sign of wear. I throw them in the washing machine after every practice day
Just ordered a set of those Sparcos. My a-stars are too big, I was getting a blister on my left palm driving the new KZ kart
Ouch
You won’t be disappointed, they are thick and have great grip. Works great when I’m driving my Kz
