What camera should I get

Probably not but you don’t need waterproof unless you plan on surfing with the kart. That would be cool though. In any case, the 5 is already waterproof to 10m I think. (Don’t quote me on this and verify before trying).

I agree with Dom. Skeleton Case for most situations, as the audio will be less muffled. In cases of heavy rain, may not be a bad idea to use sealed case (waterproof without the floaty). Driving rain and oil spray are not ideal for any electronics, water proof or not.

I am thinking about getting a camera more for analysis than anything and as long as this thread has been around there have been several new versions of Gopro. So, on a budget what camera would be ideal (gopro or other brands)? The video linked above mentioned his series not allowing camera on helmets, why would that be the case? Ideally the front of the helmet seems to provide the most information, what is the best mount to use in this location?

Once you have decided which camera you want, try looking for a used one on line.

The head mount thing comes from some saying that adding a pressure point to the helmet sort of negates the idea of spreading impact. Creates a point that is compromised. I am not sure if this is correct.

I’ve only ever owned the GoPro’s.

AFAIK: get a camera with good image stabilization. This means hero 5 Black or greater. Must have for mounting camera to kart.

The image stabilization gets crazy good with the hero 7 and more so with 8. Hero 9 right around corner.

Downside is that their software isn’t great and their support forums make you want to cry.

I have seen reviews of other brands that are excellent as well. Gopro has a nice ecosystem that makes it pretty prevalent:

I have been very happy with me hero 5 black. Got it for $110

GoPro Hero9 Black for $79.95 !!!

Just saw this on facebook and could not pass it up:

Is this a legitimate site? I’m so tempted to buy one but that price is too good to be true. I also can’t find any information regarding the website, which makes me seem skeptical

Is this legit? Please let me know.

I believe the cost of manufacturing a gopro is $150 alone

I paid with PayPal, so if its not I will just contest the purchase. Definitely not giving out personal cc info.

Hmm. Yeah that looks dodge. If you do get it I’d be wary of its, eh, supply chain.

Yeah, that’s far under market value to be legit. Smells like a “knock off”. Everybody wants a screaming deal, which can happen, but predominantly, it really comes down to getting what you pay for.

Let me know how it goes. No idea how it could be real, but there’s a chance. Sometimes people buy overflow and sell it as quickly as possible. Smart with the PayPal

Ok so hear me out…. Gimbal handhelds

There’s a different type of action cam that appears to be substantially more advanced but still small form factor. I saw an ad about the insta 360 Luna ultra that is available Friday….

first off head tracking. As we use our eyes and swivel our heads, this is huge. The image quality is very very good. Dual lenses (not sure why). More info to come.

The big question is how do I mount it? The screen is removable but it’s a handheld Gimbal stabilized unit. If there is a tripod Mount we can make it work although I will look even more ridiculous.

I hope you guys appreciate that my evangelism of karting is deliberately loud with bright colors and generally “look at me”. I am aware of this and yet it is deliberate as I aspire to be the final Boss Mob of NJ rental racing.

Luna Ultra is Insta360’s flagship gimbal camera, co-engineered with Leica. Featuring dual Leica Summicron lenses, Luna Ultra pairs a next-generation 1" 8K sensor that delivers unparalleled image quality with a groundbreaking pro-grade telephoto lens for crystalclear close-ups. Powered by a powerful Triple AI Chip and an industry-first innovative detachable 2" OLED touchscreen, Luna Ultra unlocks an entirely new gimbal experience and handles any shooting scenario with ease.

Pairs dual Leica Summicron lenses with next-generation 1" 8K sensors and professional imaging chips. It supports 8K30fps Dolby Vision recording, 4K120fps Slow Motion, 4K60fps PureVideo, and features a pro-grade telephoto lens with up to 12× zoom and 6× lossless zoom for crisp close-ups.

I can’t find field of view (FOV) info, however.

Oof, $770 is a lot. It looks like it fits a use, but I’d be hard pressed to say that use is “action cam”.

My friend uses an insta360 GO 3S in his helmet (illegally), which has great quality.

Yeah. Thing is the new cams (mission1) are edging into movie camera territory. This seems like it would be useful but I would need to discover how wide the FOV is:

I need ultra wide at least 170 degrees.unsure what this does.

it is mountable, they say, and would be intersting in a ram mount imho.

Bear in mind I race pub stuff and don’t have the limitations skusa/uspks folks have.

Color Profiles!

One could in theory attach one of these babies!

FR the camera quality is getting insanely good.

I think I’m scarred from my experience with mounting Gopros in general. Every single one I’ve had has broken or flown off the kart pretty quickly. I had one fly off during regular driving, even with safety wire. I had my latest one completely break off the kart even though I was using the Odenthal mount, granted it was my Supernats hard wreck, but I’m left weary about mounting cameras now.

IMHO cameras in helmet should be allowed with a waiver signature, which could be part of the general waiver for entry. I feel like at the very least, on-helmet (rather than in-helmet) mounting is far safer than these steel Odenthal mounts that could impale someone.

I tend to agree. The thing is the mounts will break if you apply force. You have to apply a lot of indirect force if helmet mounted. Not so much direct force required. I could pull the unit off the helmet, for example, or bend it and it would pop.

I have had one instance where an impact was hard enough to literally adjust the camera angle down (deceleration). I use a screwdriver to lock down my mounts very firmly.

Yes, I had whiplash for a month or two. Not too bad to kart tho.

If we were to have a situation where I would be launched from kart the mount would simply break off between GoPro and mounting bracket plate. It’s not strong enough to survive direct impact. Plastic.

as far as losing cams go my only problems were when I did not have very good adhesion to the underlying substrate. It must be clean and ideally smooth. It also probs needs to cure a bit.

I just ordered 3 different tiny cameras from AliExpress to see if I can make one of them fit inside the cheekpad or somewhere in the helmet. Will update with results.
