Oooh I got a nice suit just recently as well and it’s night and day comfort wise.
My practice ka100 motor, unbeknownst to me, was lean bogging. I was stuck in the mindset of leaner=faster/better response, and I thought it was running too rich this whole time! Finally turned the needle dramatically the other way this weekend after reading a post on this forum, and it feels like I have a new motor.
What were your RPMs and exhaust temps (both high and low) when in lean bog condition?
Lean bog is kind of a strange phenomenon, because it does feel like it’s too rich. Back when we ran Yamaha or HPV/KPV/Komet, it wouldn’t lean bog on the low end; if you were too lean it would hesitate and starve for fuel and cut out on throttle. When I first started running KA in '17, there was a little learning curve on figuring out how the engine would feel if it was too rich or too lean. I definitely stalled a few times on slow pace laps thinking I was rich when it was actually lean bogging, and by me cranking the needle in, I just completely shut off fuel and it would stall.
Been there done that. One of my first times out in a KA getting back into karting. Had the high speed and low speed needles confused. So lucky I didn’t weld the piston to the cylinder.
I have left the low at the builders recommendation and tune to EGT with the high. Do you mess with the low much?
I don’t recall what they were unfortunately, but it was only bogging on the low end. High end egt was normal.
To tune the low end, AFAIK , EGT is not very useful. I tune using the high end needle as well. I probably should’ve clarified in my original comment that only the low end was lean bogging. I do not touch the low end needle unless the data tells me otherwise.
Indeed it does. I have incrementally leaned out the low end over time, and it was doing essentially nothing to remediate my issue. The term “lean bogging” was new to me about a week ago, so glad I learned about it. Could’ve ended up seizing!
Well, now I am going to experiment with my race motor. I was basically stalling out completely when we were in the tram lines at my most recent race, and I thought my low end was too rich of course . Thanks for giving me another excuse to get to the track!
I rarely touch the low, only to fine tune how crispy it feels on acceleration. Very small tweaks. The majority of carb tuning is on the high speed needle to get EGTs correct.
Made a lil kart cleaning ASMR video: https://youtu.be/ijpBeArlBwc?si=udXtJMN4i5kSc3ke
Who are you trying to kid here, you’re going, clearly!
Wish there was a closer track to Hilton head SC… I’ll probably go for a couple hrs, before it gets too hot… I made some changes to kart setup (Narrowed track, moved seat forward 2 cm and dropped two teeth on rear sprocket). Maybe race this weekend, most probably race in Sept…
Cleaned the garage today. You may notice there are now 2 shifter karts in my garage. Thats because @Flyingfin789 is now a shifter kart owner. 2020 DR M99 with a K9B. Fingers crossed we get it out before the seasons over.
What did I do to my kart today? I bought it, that’s what
Been a long time coming since I sold my KT2 after Covid shenanigans but finally I can get back in the seat.
CRG Dark Rider DD2, I get my hands on it Sep 1st, been smiling all day.
Sorry for being so quiet recently, I’m back now.
Low rear ride height??
ive been running the low rear ride height for a bit now.. really feels like it plants the kart better coming off of corners.
May I ask what data you are using if not EGT? After reading these comments I think I think I need to see how the engine responds to opening the low needle.
Speed trace should give the result as long as I feel my driving is consistent, yes?
