I’ve also gotten the same advice. I’ve often wondered it is myth or real but since I don’t have data, I try to remember to do it.
Anyways race weekend coming up and with that comes my fav prepp work, i will be changing front sprocket, Cleaning manfold and cylinder exhaust port prob also sanding and poishing the manifold, take off the top and clean all the carbon buildup from piston and from the fuel chamber, changing spark, removing bendig and clutch/ starter ring assemby cleaning it and sandning clutch and oiling bendix, new brushes in start motor and a fresh battery. For the cherry on top i will be fully cleaning my kart and my gear, takes around 5hr of work, i will post on my tiktok; instagram, and youtube 2 parts of the process!
just posted part 1 on tt
I’ve heard it a lot too. I honestly think it’s an old myth that just gets repeated over and over. The springs in the 206 are pretty decent metallurgically from what I understand and are one of the parts made in the US.
That said, having the valves closed is a good way to prevent things falling into the cylinder that should not be there.
It seems like most people around me believe that not bringing it to TDC will impact the valves rather than the springs. Basically the idea is that if the engine is at TDC as soon as you come off the track, the valves are fully seated as they cool down together with the head preventing any warping which could lead to leaks.
Personally, I’ve never heard anyone say the TDC advise had anything to do with the springs.
I agree that it is probably an overblown concern or myth though. When I was new, I would forget to bring it to TDC all the time. Recently had my head inspected and leakdown was <0.5% at the valves. Its pretty hard to get much lower than that.
That makes more sense. In the scale line at the Rock Island Grand Prix I did notice some drivers pulling the engine to TDC before they even got out of the kart.
valve seats (not sure about about valves) are known to warp over time. So it’s plausible.
I don’t know if the TDC cooldown is true or not, but we have started religious doing it after experiencing a rash of leaky exhaust valves. I would lap and lap and lap and struggle to get a good seal. Put new valves in and lap it out a tiny bit, and BAM good as new. So now we are always always always pulling it over to TDC when hot.
I “worked from home today”, which means i swapped axles due to a racing incident from 2 weeks ago. Gotta get ready for the race this weekend!
Edit* jkjk, looks like video links arent a thing on here. Anyways, at the last race event in the pre-final i touched wheels with someone and i flipped through the air. It was pretty rad. Kart damage seemed minimal so i raced the final. The kart felt a little weird during right handed corners, but i wanted to finish the race. Turns out i broke my hand and bent my axle haha
Now i gotta figure out a way to squeeze my hand into my glove with this splint on …
If I’m not mistaken one of the Andy’s won a race with a hand in a cast. Anything is possible!
I’m signing up for a rental league at Supercharged which means I’ll also need to “work from home” again for one night a week for 6 weeks.
Prepping for my annual one-off this weekend. Route 66 Sprint Series at Badger. Kart cleaned, engine rebuilt, new sticker kit going on, fixed Mychron EGT lead, new brake pads, new chain…
I’ve had these brake pads on since Road America 2022. Probably seen 15-20 days of running since then. Still meat on the bones. Still don’t know how some people eat up a set in a weekend.
No korsasport livery? It’s so pretty it’s a shame to not have it.
I don’t have power in this particular warehouse where the kart is, so couldn’t get my heat gun working over there. Korsasport livery going on at the track Friday morning. It’ll be a “throwback” livery… Meaning I don’t have another current design kit but I have 3 of the previous design I need to use up, so we’ll rock those.
Eh you caught me not reading well. Sorry!
Put a new seat on my son’s kart after he was hit during his first heat today, and the seat strut punched through the fiberglass and jabbed him in the ribs. Met him at the scale keeled over in tears, he ran 9 laps with the seat strut jabbed in him, and the seat dragging on the track.
I suggested we head home, and his response was “no! Can you get me a new seat before the next heat?”
Good grief. Tough kid!
Broken seat - ouch
seat strut jabbing you in the side - Double ouch
How old is your son?
He’s 11, he was hellbent to finish the day.
On Saturday, during the final, the chain let go and wrapped itself around the axle and in the process bent the sprocket and shredded the sprocket hub.
After fighting with sanding the burrs on the axle, we got the axle out, cleaned up everything, installed a new sprocket hub, sprocket and chain. It took about the hours. Much longer than I expected.
In the races on Sunday, the kart ran well.
Lessons learned:
lube the chain,
don’t go off the track,
if you do go off the track, completely clean the chain and lube it,
be careful to not marr the surface of the axle,
have a stone or sandpaper in your toolbox,
be very grateful for the awesome clubmates and vendors who help you out with hands on help and trackside parts!
