Capture your track day

I’ve been reading reviews that the Hero 6 hasn’t been received as well as the Hero 5.

The audio is awful but otherwise it’s a step forwards in many ways. Great image shake reduction, 4K 120 FPS, etc. I tried external mic but not really suited for karting.

Davin,
I’ve must have read the same reviews. The videos we make are only for our edification. No Oscar awards coming our way. We use old GoPros. They’re good enough.

One, don’t get a Garmin Virb XE, the GPS only updates at 1Hz and the camera has been discontinued, so no more firmware updates. The XE will now be my rear facing camera.

Two, just got the Garmin Virb Ultra 30. GPS updates at 10Hz, so it should be alot better for what I’m trying to do.

Also, just picked up some goodies to up my audio and mounting game.

I used to use Hero 2s, but the costs of the Session 5s are so affordable, it was a no brainer to get some of them.

Davin,
Is the field of view horizontally on the Sessions the same as the Hero 2’s? From where our Hero 2 sits, can see the driver’s feet but with a little wider angle lens could possibly see the front tires.

It works really well for me. It was also smaller hardware and better resolution.

Davin, was going to say thanks, but posts must be at least 20 characters.

Are karters utilising whiskers on their go-pro’s microphone?

Very common with Motorbike races to see a chest mounted 3x Axis gimble and whiskers. Makes for quite watchable footage without the roar of the wind blowing your speakers. Same with mountain bike vids; BKXC, Seths bike hacks and the like in youtube for example.

Hero 6 requires an external mic adapter which complicates mounting. I tried and lost my gopro at 50mph. Survived, however.

The Garmin Ultra 30 internal mic is no good when mounted up front. I tried a external mic and it’s better for volume, but it’s a cheap mic and the sound is weird. Ordered a better mic and wires and will try it out soon.

I have also put safety tethers on the camera to help with loosing the camera. I bolt what ever I can down and have switch to metal mounts instead of plastic.

Here’s the video with the cheap mic. The weird sound of the mic goes away when on I’m the throttle.

Maybe there’s a setting that allows you to reduce mic sensitivity? It seems like it is boosting that blippy noise.

I bought a rode shotgun mic for the “studio” (messy garage) a week or so ago. Could be interesting to point it at the tires or something.

That sound is pretty good except for that weird thing at idle you mentioned. Considering it’s at the front, the motor is clear.

That HR though

It’s pretty amazing how much chirping the tires do,even in a straight line. I’d love to be able to isolate that just out of curiousity.

I only had enough wire to place the external mic under the nassau to baffle it from the wind. I plan on putting it behind the seat to get more sound from the motor. Really want to capture the popping sounds when getting off it.

@KartingIsLife I did get little fuzzy covers for the mic. My own worry is having to water proof it maybe. There are probably a couple things I can do.

Also want to add a rear facing camera. Recommendations for mounting locations? On the seat back or seat braces?

Sometimes affectionately called the losercam. d:
I would say seat is going to be the easiest option for mounting and you have a nice wide surface area to work with.

Interested. I’ve been following Kolme’s progress with his Zero motorcycle based kart, as that’s really where I want to go. The main restriction to date has being motor cooling. His latest test was limiting the output to 25KW, and I see this one is limited to 20KW with some boost amount.
