Karting in all 50 States: Where Should I Race Next?

What makes you say that?

I would have hoped you could have hooked up with folks with spare karts, given the forums and all.

I mean, I can’t reasonably expect anyone to do that for me. As you know, karting costs a lot of money and people still need to make a living. Some races, I have raced for free (shoutout @crafty), some I’ve used my own karts, some I’ve outright rented. Promoting on social media and OpenFender has definitely helped the sting a bit, but I know what I’ve gotten myself into haha

Oh yeah of course. Still…

If you ever need NJ seat time in a developed racing rig for your next 50 challenge… I’ll be getting motion soon. Still using your steering wheel, btw. Hasn’t broken yet!

@jd896 what’s the latest?

I know he was at the Saturday Night Shootout in Richland, WA. Also being a race director there.

I’m a little twisted up right now, I’ll definitely provide a long catch-up after I get through Rok Vegas.

@NikG Yeah, they suckered me into helping them out haha. I’d like to think that yelling at the Junior 2 grid got them to figure their starts out!

Barely related, but this is my thread, so I can do what I want

Building up the shifter grid for the NY State Championship at OVRP this coming Sunday (10/22). Looking like we’ll have at least 15, with White, Sarracino, and Conquer headlining the division. Pretty stoked to ride around behind them all day. Then fly out to Vegas on Monday night

Very cool photo as well. Is that you?

Oh wait… that’s Justin White! Jerry’s son!

Happy that we had 15 registered yesterday, not happy that two out of three podium spots were occupied by Canadians  Surprise appearance by Zach Claman-DeMelo was nice!

Can’t wait to hit the track in Vegas this week

Hey congrats. Also congrats to Justin and others. I like free tires as a prize.

Now that I have time to breathe, I can provide a quick update.
Completed number 27 in Virginia on August 19: 6 Hours at VIR with Endurance Karting. Partnered up with my friends, Alec and Nate, while they were in town for the next day’s TKC event at Trackhouse. We rolled home 6th overall after starting 16th, so it was a decent run for us, considering the circumstances. Racing got a little dicey near the end with a Junior driver, who insisted on inserting his front bumper into my rear bumper at every apex. Twice got around me, only to blow a corner within the same lap, so that was… interesting to deal with.

Traveled over to Washington the following week for the Saturday Night Shootout, thanks to Doug Huggler providing me a 206. Got suckered into acting as a consultant for the event as well, but that paid for my entry fee, so it was worthwhile! The event atmosphere was super cool, but the layout used was pretty lackluster. 75% flatout, maybe two good places to overtake. Didn’t really take any pictures or video cause I couldn’t figure out why I was so slow compared to the rest of the field. Was thrashing to make the kart do what I wanted to, but to no avail. It was a pretty demoralizing weekend, honestly.

Justin, was VIR a good one for EK? Worth looking into for next season?

I’d say it’s worth a trip for next year. Definitely one of the more technical tracks, despite it’s shorter length. My back muscles were real sore after this one

And now the big one: Vegas. What a trip.

The tough shit first: Got removed from the Main with 3 to go. Engine was cooking at 160-170 degrees, but I was going to blow up before I pulled in willingly. Pretty sure it was a water pump failure of some sort because the radiator was ice cold and the pulley cords were still there. Hopefully that’s enough of an excuse to cope with seeing the black flag for being lapped traffic :joy:

The good stuff: Just an all-around awesome time. I’ve worked under the Rok Cup banner since 2018, so being on the other side of the event for a group that’s supported me from the beginning was cool. Got to see a lot of things I don’t normally get to see. Going out for first practice was a pretty surreal experience. Even got to basically qualify by myself. Qualifying was 15 minutes and everyone in the shifter field was going to wait around until the last possible minute to go. So naturally, I had my mechanic shove me off immediately so I could clean the track for everyone. Got multiple texts during that to show my P1 in qualifying haha

Had my first taste of the barriers in Heat 1. Was trying to hard, tried to brake (way) too late. Settled down in Heat 2 and actually had a good battle with some drivers. It was a nice feeling to know I wasn’t that far off from the field. I feel like I’ve been one second off the leaders, perpetually, no matter what category I’ve driven this year. So I’m wondering what I’m fundamentally missing in my driving, but considering where I started the year in shifter specifically, I’m real happy with my performance.

Still a lot to learn: Need to be way more aggressive on the starts, way more aggressive on the brakes, and learn how to turn my racing brain on quicker. But for now, I’m just happy I had a few weekends off. I’m exhausted.

Nice share! Beautiful photos! I’m glad you had a great experience as a driver, this time.

Who is helping you there? You tented presumably?

Cory Milne brought me a rental Maranello, Peter Licciardi turned the wrenches for me all week, and I was tented under the Aluminos camp.
